Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Diet Plan

I have been providing dietary advice in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) which includes Crohn’s disease and Ulcerative Colitis for over 13 years.

In your consultation, I will consider your full medical history and listen to your specific nutritional concerns.

Some common concerns people with IBD have raised and may sound familiar to you - if so, I am here to help!

  • Are you struggling to maintain your weight but don’t know what foods can help?

  • Are you suffering with troubling gut symptoms and want advice on foods that may improve or worsen your symptoms?

  • Are you worried that certain foods cause or worsen flare-ups?

  • Are you restricting foods but now concerned you have an unbalanced diet?

  • Have you read about diets for IBD on the internet but now feel more confused?

Finding the diet for you

I can help guide you on how to follow a healthy diet during remission and support your nutrition during times of disease flare up. I am experienced in the use of exclusive enteral nutrition (a special liquid formulated diet) which is very successful in treating active Crohn’s disease. If you have specific concerns about nutrition before and after surgery or diets for ileostomies and colostomies I can help there too.

I am passionate about providing the most up to date evidence-based advice and keep up to date on emerging dietary treatments. I am a modulifeTM diet trained expert (www.modulife.us) which is a new exciting dietary approach for the management of Crohn’s Disease both during a disease flare up and during disease remission. If you feel this is the right diet for you I can help guide and support you through the various stages of this diet

We can explore the evidence behind novel foods and diets to help manage your IBD and gut symptoms.  IBD can increase risk of nutritional deficiencies due to a combination of factors including poor appetite, impaired gut function following surgery and restrictive diets.  Through assessment of your current diet and medical history I can advise on ways to optimise your nutrient intake.

Functional gut symptoms are also common in IBD. There is emerging evidence that the low FODMAP diet is an effective dietary strategy. I have undertaken specialist training at King’s College on the low FODMAP diet and am able to provide dietary advice on this diet in IBD where clinically appropriate.
